Squirrels

In the United States, there are over 200 species of squirrels classified as either a ground, tree, or flying squirrel. Our wildlife professionals are knowledgeable in handling each type of squirrel; however, flying squirrels and tree squirrels will use your home as shelter, making them capable of causing more damage than ground squirrels.

A squirrel in your home should not be ignored. While cute, these critters can create significant damage inside and outside your home. They will use available materials like insulation to create nests, bring in nuts and seeds, and harbor ectoparasites like fleas or diseases like leptospirosis.

Squirrel removal from attics or homes is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Damage to Property: Squirrels can cause significant damage by chewing through electrical wiring, insulation, and wooden structures. This damage can lead to fire hazards, water leaks from chewed pipes, and compromised structural integrity.
  2. Health Risks: Squirrel droppings and urine can spread diseases such as leptospirosis and salmonella. Their presence can also attract fleas, ticks, and mites, which can further spread diseases to humans and pets.
  3. Noise and Disruption: Squirrels are active during the day and can create loud noises when nesting, running, or chewing. This can disrupt sleep and daily activities for homeowners.
  4. Potential for Nesting: Squirrels often build nests in attics or wall voids, using insulation and other materials. These nests can harbor parasites and attract other wildlife, exacerbating the infestation.
  5. Property Value and Aesthetics: The presence of squirrels can decrease property value and curb appeal, especially if visible signs of damage or infestation are noticeable.
  6. Prevention of Recurrence: Proper squirrel removal should include identifying and sealing potential entry points to prevent future infestations. This may involve repairing roof damage, sealing gaps in siding, and trimming tree branches away from the house.
