The Mission Behind The IIIB’s Foundation

The IIIB’s Foundation was created with that reality in mind. Its mission is to provide comfort to women recovering from breast cancer mastectomy surgery through Bosom Buddy Baskets filled with recovery and resource items. The organization is based in Northern Virginia and has been serving women since its founding in 2004.
The story behind the foundation makes its mission even more meaningful. Founder Carolyn Cole-Rodenburg experienced breast cancer herself and underwent a double mastectomy. After going through the physical and emotional challenges of breast cancer, she wanted to help other women feel supported and prepared during their own journeys. That personal experience helped inspire the creation of The IIIB’s Foundation.
What started from one survivor’s desire to help other women has grown into an organization providing comfort and support to breast cancer patients in hospitals and communities.
What Is a Bosom Buddy Basket?
The Bosom Buddy Basket is designed specifically with mastectomy recovery in mind. Rather than being a general gift basket, it contains items intended to provide comfort and practical support during the early days following surgery.
According to The IIIB’s Foundation, the baskets are personally created for pre-operation mastectomy patients and are designed to be especially useful during the first five days after surgery.
That attention to detail is what makes these baskets so special.
After surgery, everyday activities can suddenly become more difficult. Something as simple as getting comfortable, reaching for an item, traveling home from the hospital, or finding a little distraction can require more thought than it normally would.
The Bosom Buddy Baskets are meant to help with some of those small but important moments.
Past descriptions of the baskets have included items such as comfort blankets, pillows, back scratchers, sleep masks, stress-relief items, and other recovery-related supplies. The baskets have also included a stuffed lamb designed to attach to a seat belt and provide cushioning during the ride home after surgery.
