Foxes

Relatives of domestic dogs, foxes live throughout the world on every continent except Antarctica. They are traditionally noted for being resourceful, intelligent, and cunning, qualities that also contribute to their status as nuisance pests. Foxes can adapt to most types of habitats found within their range, and they frequently live in areas where human activity results in the high availability of food, water, and shelter. The most common species in the United States are the red fox and the gray fox.

Removing foxes from homes is important for several reasons:

  1. Safety: Foxes can pose a threat to small pets and occasionally to humans, especially if they feel cornered or threatened.
  2. Property Damage: Foxes can dig and burrow, potentially damaging lawns, gardens, and landscaping. They may also chew on outdoor furniture or structures.
  3. Noise and Disturbance: Foxes can be noisy, especially during mating season or when searching for food, which can disrupt sleep and cause annoyance.
  4. Health Concerns: Foxes can carry diseases such as rabies, mange, and parasites like ticks and fleas. Their feces can also transmit diseases to pets and humans.
  5. Preventing Encouragement: Feeding foxes can habituate them to human presence, leading to more frequent visits and potential conflicts. Removing them discourages dependence on human-provided food sources.
  6. Legal Considerations: In some areas, foxes may be protected wildlife, and their removal may require proper permits and humane methods.
