Groundhogs

To solve a problem, you must figure out why you have the problem in the first place. If you have a woodchuck in your yard, also called a groundhog, it’s likely because they have found a food supply. Woodchucks are like most wildlife. They are searching for food, water, and shelter.

Woodchucks hibernate during the winter. During the spring, summer, and fall, you will find them to be very active during the day. They don’t stay out all day, however. Early mornings and evenings are when they do most of their hunting for food.

Removing groundhogs from your home or property is important for several reasons:

  1. Structural Damage: Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are prolific diggers. Their burrowing can cause significant structural damage to foundations, patios, sidewalks, and driveways. These burrows can undermine the structural integrity of buildings and other structures.
  2. Garden and Crop Destruction: Groundhogs are herbivores and can cause extensive damage to gardens and crops. They feed on a variety of plants, vegetables, and fruits, potentially destroying entire gardens or sections of agricultural fields.
  3. Safety Hazards: The extensive burrow systems created by groundhogs can pose tripping hazards to humans and animals. These burrows can also be dangerous for livestock, which can injure themselves if they step into a hole.
  4. Pest Attraction: Groundhog burrows can attract other pests, such as rats, mice, and insects, which can lead to further infestations and problems around the home and property.
  5. Disease Transmission: Groundhogs can carry diseases and parasites that can be transmitted to humans and pets, including ticks, fleas, and mites. They are also potential carriers of rabies, which poses a serious health risk.
  6. Competition with Other Wildlife: Groundhogs can compete with other wildlife for food and habitat. Their burrowing can displace other animals and disrupt local ecosystems.
